19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Dr. J.E. Taylor's (1837-1895) Our Island-Continent detailed his journey to Australia, which was described in his opening paragraph as necessary for a complete change of scene. Taylor observed that the older generation in England had not overcome the notion that travel to the Antipodes was banishment. He instead emphasised the luxurious nature of the journey to what he called another part of Great Britain. Taylor travelled via the Indian Ocean, arriving in South Australia. The work was written in a flowery, casual style, and described city and country life in the majority of the mainland colonies.
