Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
Scottish born George Sutherland (1855-1905) was a prolific author and journalist who earned an MA from Melbourne University. In Australia, or, England in the South, Sutherland presented an illustrated description of his journey to Australia, as well as the cities of Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and Brisbane. He described the Australia in an anecdotal manner, detailing the population and society of the colonies and their climate, and made reference to agriculture and industry, especially gold mining. Sutherland also authored, among other titles,Tales of the Goldfields (1880) and The South Australian Company. A Study in Colonisation (1898).
