Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
William Stamer (otherwise known as Mark Tapley, Junior) presented an account of his life over the two-volume Recollections of a Life of Adventure. Beginning with his childhood, Stamer chronicled his travels to America, Europe and Australia. In the antipodes Stamer described the gold diggers, gold fields and the rollicking situations he comes across; he was scornful of colonial manners. He also detailed the architecture and streets of Sydney and Melbourne, the Australian bush, and the work of his friend Dr. Lang on Queensland. Stamer also authored the emigrant guide The Gentleman Emigrant (1874).
