Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
Dr. John Shaw was a fellow of the Geological and Linnean Societies of London and the Botanical of Edinburgh. This travel narrative commenced with an account of his voyage to the Antipodes, and advice for intending emigrants. Once in Australia, Shaw chronicled his experience of Melbourne and the gold diggings, before travelling to New Zealand for an extensive period. Returning to Sydney, Shaw completed his journey to England with a lengthy stay in India. Shaw's travel narrative included geographical and political information, in addition to providing an account of the daily life of a traveller. Shaw also published Rambles in the United States, Canada, and the West Indies and A Tramp to the Diggings (1852).
