Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
In A Tramp to the Diggings, John Shaw, fellow of the Geological and Linnean Societies of London and the Botanical of Edinburgh, presented an account of his time on the Australian gold fields. Shaw discussed the Aboriginal population, convicts, the population of the colonies, as well as colonial politics and religion. It included a chapter on emigration, including observations on the obstacles likely faced by potential emigrants, and accompanying advice. Shaw later published A Gallop to the Antipodes (1858).
