'Since the earliest days of cinema, literature has been a popular source of inspiration for filmmakers, and Australian literary texts have been no exception. Over the past century more than 60 Australian novels have been adapted for the big screen along with numerous poems, short stories and comics. This chapter examines the history of this repurposing. It presents an annotated chronology of the movies produced in Australia and elsewhere, and explores some of the key debates that have emerged around the practice of adapting literary works for the screen within both literary criticism and film studies.'
