Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
John Skinner Prout (1805-1876), a prolific artist of the colonies, painter, lithographer and art teacher, published his travel narrative Journal of a Voyage from Plymouth to Sydney. Prout prefaced the work by stating its authorship was for the amusement of friends at home, not publication. However, it was printed by those friends in the hope it would be useful to those who contemplated emigration to Australia as it exhibited "a true and vivid picture of life on board ship, rarely to be met with." It is structured as daily journal entries of the voyage, Prout's arrival in Sydney, and a short description of Sydney and Port Phillip. Prout also wrote An Illustrated Handbook of the Voyage to Australia and a Visit to the Gold Fields (1852).
