Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
Australian actor and author William Tyrone Power KCB (1819-1911) was son of famous Irish actor and author William Grattan Tyrone Power. His Sketches in New Zealand with Pen and Pencil were compiled from a journal kept during his travels from July 1846 - July 1848. Published the following year, these sketches were intended to be both an anecdotal and entertaining travel narrative, as well as an emigrant guide for all classes. The focus of this work was not Australia, however chapters 1, 22 and 23 concentrate on Sydney, where Power described the prospects of settlers, city life, and his preparations for the overland route via Asia and Africa for England. Power also authored numerous travel narratives.
