Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
The illustrated global Journal of Voyagesand Travels by the Rev. Daniel Tyerman (1773-1828) and George Bennet (1774-1841), Esquire, was compiled and published by James Montgomery (1774-1854). In these journals Tyerman and Bennet detailed their missionary travels between 1821 and 1829. Written in a diary format, they describe the stations in the South Sea Islands, China and India, describing day to day life, society, scenery, with an emphasis on religious matters. Tyerman and Bennet visited Australia from June 1824 to June 1825, and two chapters in the second volume describe Sydney, convicts, the Aboriginal populations and their customs, the conversion of New Hollanders and flora and fauna; their next destination was Batavia.
