19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
James Coutts Crawford (1817-1889), formerly of the British Navy, explorer and settler in New Zealand, wrote his illustrated Recollections of Travel as a chronicle of his experiences in the early days of the colonies of New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia and New Zealand. During his time there, Crawford saw the colonies as being in a "wild state," seeing his Recollections as a contribution to the history of the colonies. It chiefly concentrated on New Zealand, but also included chapters on journeys from Sydney to Adelaide, and a trip to Tasmania.
