19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Thomas Cook (1859-1912) provides a travel narrative of his missionary tour in his work Days of God's Right Hand Our Mission Tour in Australasia and Ceylon. In his preface, Cook noted that he endeavoured to provide an unvarnished account of the "remarkable triumphs of the Cross" that he witnessed during his journey undertaken with his wife. The work contains numerous photographs of the Wesleyan Churches throughout Australia, as well as ethnographic images of Indigenous populations they encountered on their journey. Cook describes the journey to Australia, the state of the cities, and his visits to the colonies of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland and New South Wales. The text is dominated, however, by proceedings of religious meetings and bible references.
