  • 19th-Century Australian Travel Writing

Samuel Travers Clover (1859-1934) was a British-born American journalist, writer, and newspaper editor. Leaves from a Diary was drawn from his youthful travels, which he was encouraged to take before being appointed to the Chicago Times. He wrote journal entries of his global tour, and this book is episodic in structure and narrative form. Written in the first person in a casual style, Clover briefly describes his visit to the Australian colonies. From the same source material, Clover also wrote the children’s fictional novel Paul Travers' Adventures: Being a Faithful Narrative of a Boy's Journey around the World (1897). He went on to have a long journalistic career.
