19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
John Capper (1814-1898)—former coffee planter in Ceylon, journalist, sometime editor of The Emigrant's Journal and the Ceylon Examiner—also published Philip's Emigrants' Guide to Australia in numerous editions. This title, appearing in Stanford's Emigrant's Guides series, provided a brief description of emigration, including settlement in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, as well as practical information about agricultural prospects, including current prices. Capper was a regular contributor to Charles Dickens’ Household Words and published widely on India, including Three Presidencies of India (1853).
