19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Pastoralist and gold prospector William Frederick Buchanan (1824–1911) wrote Australia to the Rescue following a visit to England. Buchanan intended for the book to address what he saw as an ignorance of the colonies and to encourage young British men to emigrate, claiming that they would only find success in the colonies if their hearts did not fail them. Consequently, the history and description of the colonies of Australia also included a section containing hints for the emigrant, and incidents of bush life. Buchanan wrote with an earnest tone, openly stating that emigration to Tasmania should not be encouraged as government assistance has stopped, and that land in South Australia was easy to acquire. It concluded with a commentary of the effects that Federation may bring.
