  • 19th-Century Australian Travel Writing

Writer and editor Ellen Barlee (1825-1893) was the sister of West Australian colonial secretary Sir Frederick Palgrave Barlee, and Queensland Parliamentary reporter, journalist and editor, Charles Haynes Barlee. Her emigration guide Western Australia was designed for the working classes of Britain, and was similar to the more extensive papers, Queensland, Australia, written by her brother Charles, and edited by Ellen herself. A footnote indicates that this pamphlet had been collected from Mr. Knight's book on Western Australia, and provided material on the climate, government, expenses of living, how to reach the colonies, wages and other information that would be useful for working-class Britons who intended (or could be influenced) to emigrate to the Australian colonies. Barlee also wrote the emigrant guide Victoria, a Land of Plenty.
