19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Rev. James Ballantyne (1818-1896), author of Homes and Homesteads in the Land of Plenty (1871), continues his praise for the Australian colonies in the illustrated Our Colony in 1880. He states that the work is intended to encourage emigration for those of the "right class in England who are feeling that 'the land is not able to bear them.'" It describes the history, statistics, industry, agriculture, the price of labour, climate, and literature of Victoria in a dry, straightforward manner.
