19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Journal of an Experimental Trip is an account by James Allen Junior (1830/1-1869) of his journey on the River Murray on board the "Lady Augusta." The work is written in a conventional diary format and follows Allen's travel on land from Adelaide to Goolwa, and along the Murray. It forms a detailed account of his day-to-day experiences of travel, concluding with a detailed recital of a dinner with the Legislative Council for Captain Cadell and the officers of the "Lady Augusta” after the conclusion of their journey. This is followed by an extract from the Times that describes their expedition along the Murray.
