Bianca Millroy is an Australian writer of literary fiction and creative non-fiction.
Bianca was the recipient of the 2024 Scribe-Varuna Nonfiction Fellowship for her creative nonfiction work-in-progress, Caput Nebula (Head of Fog), which explores the intersections between creative practice and functional neurological disorders (FND). As a creative practitioner with FND, Bianca draws on lived experience to investigate the ways in which creativity and the medical humanities can inform inclusive, patient-centred interactions and improve awareness of FND in Australia. She is currently completing her PhD in creative nonfiction and science communication at The University of Queensland, St Lucia.
In 2020, Bianca’s first unpublished manuscript ‘The Looming’ was shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Awards (Glendower Award) and is inspired by true events surrounding one of Australia’s most isolated lighthouses. She has since started writing ‘Sweetwater’, an Australian gothic crime mystery novel set in the Glasshouse Mountains. Her award-winning stories have been published in literary journals and anthologies, such as Science Write Now, Visible Ink, and Writing Queensland.
Bianca is also an experienced editor of fiction and non-fiction, and has worked with a range of authors and clients for their editing and publishing needs. Recently published client work includes Brisbane Bookshops (AndAlso, 2023), Among the River Sallows by NDH Nielsen, (2023), Wanderer by Alan ‘Fox’ Rogers (Fly By Night, 2022), and Paradiso by Steve Capelin (AndAlso, 2021). Bianca was the lead editor of GenreCon's Forbidden Doors (2023), and Lighthouse (2020), as well as two creative writing anthologies, Emerge (2018) and Grey Matter (2016).
Bianca lives and writes on unceded Jaegera-Turrbal country, in Meanjin/Brisbane and feels most at home near the water, especially if there is a lighthouse nearby.
Bianca is also part of the team at AustLit, and her role as Research and Engagement Assistant involves the curation of AustLit’s newsletter, research and grant writing, and other outreach initiatives. Previously she volunteered for AustLit’s project, Liminal Spaces, Solitary Places: Lighthouses in Australian Literature.
