BiographyHistory

Sophia Lewis is known for the circumstances of her murder: a prostitute in nineteenth-century Melbourne, she was murdered in her home in December 1856. Since most of her clients were Chinese, the crime triggered a wave of anti-Chinese sentiment: two Chinese men were sentenced and hanged, largely on circumstantial evidence.

Sophia Lewis's murder is the subject of Ken Oldis' The Chinawoman (2008).
