About the poem:
Songbirds of Saigon is an observational poem about generational and environmental change. It was written at the Tao Dan Park Bird Cafe in Ho Chi Minh City, where men have brought their prized songbirds for decades to learn new songs. It’s a tradition and daily ritual of connection for the ‘bird men of Saigon’, as much as for the birds. The poem also comments on the possibility of extinction, as the modern world closes in around the scene.
