BiographyHistory

Fanny Finch (Frances Combe Finch) was born in 1815 to African parents in the United Kingdom, and grew up at The London Foundling Hospital as an orphan.

In 1837 she emigrated to a colony in South Australia. In the 1850s she relocated to Victoria, around the time of the Victorian gold rush, and opened Mrs Finch's Board and Lodging House. She is known for casting a voting at the Hall of Castlemaine in 1855, and is now considered to be the first known female voter in Australia.
