'From the critically acclaimed author of Paris or Die and My Sweet Guillotine comes a powerfully written and deeply personal story of ambition, art and human nature in Paris.

'I am the worst person in the world.
Bad mother. Bad lover. Bad worker. Bad woman. Bad friend ...

'An exploration of motherdom and ego, culture and art, love and pain, The Sea in the Metro tells the story of a new mother in Paris trying to make it work – and failing. What happens when the control you thought you had over your life is usurped by your nature?

'Jayne was raised to believe she could have everything. Child, career, relationship, even a life in Paris. So why does she feel like a monster? As her ego wars with her natural instincts, Jayne searches for answers in friendship, the city, memories of her late mother, art, writing and New Wave films … and finds only more questions. There are parts of herself that parenthood won't let her avoid.

'Unsentimental and untamed, The Sea in the Metro is an unflinching excavation of modern womanhood that marks the thrilling return of an incredible talent in Australian literature.'  (Publication summary)

1 1 y separately published work icon Paris or Die : A Memoir Jayne Tuttle , Richmond : Hardie Grant Books , 2019 18415629 2019 single work autobiography 'Paris. The beauty. The grime. The colours and thoughts and songs and sounds and children and dogs. The taste of strawberries, the sky, first metro, last metro, the bells, the dreams ... The city of light, it seems, has its own plans for Jayne. Drawn there in an entirely unforeseen way, she finds herself in a vibrant and dizzying neighbourhood, living in a former monastery, studying at a famous theatre school, falling in love with a Frenchman too beautiful to be real. She will forget her past and disappear into the culture if it kills her. And one strange night, it nearly does. Sharp, funny and unflinchingly honest, Jayne Tuttle's writing lifts you off the page and into a Paris far beyond the postcards. Paris or Die is a headlong plunge into not just life in Paris, but life itself.'

'Rachel's cousin, Cassie, starts to socialise with Rachel and her friends. Cassie is a nice enough girl, but she's very different from Rachel and Sophie. She's into make-up, clothes and staying up late, whereas Rachel and Sophie are more interested in sport, movies and early training sessions. The differences between them gradually become more obvious, causing friction, until Cassie eventually loses interest in the group and moves on. Rachel and Sophie go to the Netball Regional Screening Day and perform well. They both receive invitations to attend the next Zone Talent Camp, but Sophie's mother is diagnosed with breast cancer at the same time. This news places enormous stress on the family and it looks as though Sophie will have to miss out on the camp. Daniel suggests they organise a car wash to raise money for some home help so that Sophie can still go. Rachel still joins in the car wash, even though Daniel has been distancing himself from her and she's not sure why. Rachel and Sophie attend the Zone Talent Camp, where Rachel clashes with the head coach and thinks she has been left out of the squad as a result. It turns out that the coach was driving her to see what she could achieve under pressure. Rachel is offered a scholarship to the Victorian Institute for Sport. Ages 9+' (Publication abstract)
