Struggling to find work in the city, Dick Craigie gains employment on Blexer's farm. He falls in love with a young girl, Etty; however, he does not reveal his feelings for her until he is about to return to the city. Working as a clerk in the bank thee years later, he recalls that he never saw Etty again.
