'She's wearing fishnet stockings, red high-heeled boots and white knickers stretched tight across her ass. She looks over her shoulder, a surprised squawk on her face. She's mid-way through chowing into a burger, grease oozing over her feathered hands. Her comb is a seductive red, her beak stained with lipstick. and is chick has titties, too: her breasts are huge.'

'Three figures run onto the rail bridge. They're shadowed, deeply silhouetted in the faint glow of dawn, their faces covered. Within seconds, they're in the middle of the bridge, rapidly hoisting a rope from the riverbed below up onto the tracks. They pull it tight, bodies leaning back against the rope, then disappear as they bend down to tie the knots. Fifteen seconds later, it's done. The rope stretches from the bridge to a tall tree. Dangling from the other end of the rope, hoisted over a branch several metres in the air, is a small tent-like structure with a man inside. The figures on the bridge gesture to the man, then pack up their gear and split for the highway.'  (Publication abstract)

1 Hot Mess Emma Hardy , 2017 single work essay
— Appears in: Voiceworks , Winter no. 108 2017; (p. 39-45)

'It's near silent in the early morning dawn-light hours. Now and again, zombie-like figures pop up in the headlights of the trawling ute. They keep walking, dumb and ghostly, and have to be startled with the flicking on-off-on-off of the high beams. Confused, they stagger away from the light, clearing the road. They're lost, looking for something to do, somewhere to sleep, someone to sleep with.'  (Publication abstract)
