'Dr Bill Jonas was a geographer and public intellectual of national significance. He was a proud Worimi man who was born in Sydney and grew up on his Country in the small town of Allworth, near Karuah north of Newcastle. He was the first Aboriginal person to be awarded a PhD (UPNG 1980), and Australia's second Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner. He advocated passionately for social justice, protection of Aboriginal heritage, improvements in Aboriginal education, Indigenous and human rights and reconciliation. He was a treasured friend, teacher and mentor. ' (Introduction)
