Shirley Fung was raised in Penang, but undertook study at Monash University Melbourne, from 1967, when she was awarded a Colombo Plan Scholarship. She has published numerous biology and environmental science books, and has worked as a science educator.
As of 2018, when she published her debut novel, she was based in Australia.
