Born to South African parents in exile and raised in Zambia, Kenya, and Canada, Sisonke Msimang has held fellowships at Yale University, the Aspen Institute. and the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. In 2018, she was based in Perth, as head of oral storytelling at the Centre for Stories.
In 2019, she released The Resurrection of Winnie Mandela, an analysis of the complicated reputation of Winnie Mandela and her role in the fight against apartheid in South Africa.
