  • Research Methodology

The Australian Colonial Narrative Journalism a representative archive of narrative journalism practised up until Federation, plus an accompanying bibliography of secondary sources.

Using well-known definitions of narrative journalism formulated in the United States as a starting point, emblematic works were identified that contribute to both a definition of the local genre and the depiction of the social, economic and technological milieu in which they were written.

The research field was dauntingly wide with hundreds of newspapers and magazines published in Australia over the period. Working on the reasonably safe assumption that any journalist of note would be published in the mainstream press, the potential list of publications chosen for study was narrowed. The methodology often led to the tracking of writers who wrote non-fiction in literary ways across time and across publications, rather than pinning down individual works.
