    • Alex refers to the works of the French poet Arthur Rimbaud and philosopher Albert Camus (and specifically The First Man).
    • His Comrade Pawel story was first published in Meanjin by Jim Davidson.
    • Alex move to the Australian Outback was driven, in part, by seeing Sid Nolan’s‘ The Verandah’.
    • When asked to reflect on his style of writing and fictionalised memoir, Alex discussed John Berger’s A Way of Seeing and Gyorgy Lukacs' Theory of the Novel. He also differentiated his work from that of Karl Ove Knausgaard.
    • Alex ends the interview with a reference to the French theorist, Georges Bataille.
