'Alison Lester is an Australian treasure. Few families have not delighted in the award winning Are We There Yet, and Clive Eats Alligators, and Imagine. Alison is a creator of more than twenty-five picture books, two young adult novels and a collection of short stories, and she was the inaugural Australian Children’s Laureate along with Boori Monty Pryor.' (Introduction)

    • Alison recommends the work of Jennifer Egan , especially A Visit from the Goon Squad and Manhattan Beach, as well as novels by Peter Carey  and Richard Flanagan .
    • Alison credits her three main editors for preventing her work form becoming sentimental: Roslyn Price and Rita Scharf and Janie Godwin.
    • Alison enjoys the work of fellow children’s book authors and illustrators Babette Cole, Anna WalkerBob Graham  and Shaun Tan .
    • Of all the classic children’s works, Alison would have most like to create Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are.
