'This issue of Australian Aboriginal Studies contains five major articles on a range of anthropological, historical and ethnomusicological topics by various senior and younger scholars. The first article is by a recent graduate of the University of Canberra. Poroch’s subject matter is empowerment of Indigenous communities in the area of welfare delivery; her scope is broad but her focus clearly on the intentions of the Coalition government and the effects of its policies in muting Indigenous voices and marginalising Indigenous minorities while mainstreaming government services. She offers a persuasive contrast based on the North American experience.' (Editorial introduction)
