History

The Joseph Furphy Commemorative Literary Prize was originally awarded annually by the Goulburn Valley Regional Library Corporation to a resident of the Goulburn Valley. It was sponsored by The Furphy Family of Shepparton who established the Furphy Foundry.

In 2020, it was announced that the award would be launched nationally, with a new sponsor (brewing company Lion) and prize money of $15,000 and a residency at La Trobe University. The award is given to previously unpublished stories of up to 5000 words.
