- Adrian’s love of reading started with science fiction, and in particular Ursula Le Guin, Isaac Asimov, Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Brian Aldiss, Arthur C. Clarke, Philip K. Dick and William Gibson.
- Adrian enjoys reading the crime writers Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and Jim Thompson.
- Adrian set the Sean Duffy novels in the street, and indeed the house, he grew up in.
- Venerable Bede‘s Ecclesiastical History of England inspired the s’s at the beginning and end of Gun Street Girl (the fourth volume in the Sean Duffy series).
- When writing crime, Adrian prefers decision-making (for example, in King Lear) over bad timing (like in Romeo and Juliet) to drive the action. He gives an example from Breaking Bad, when Walter White (in all his arrogance) leaves a copy of Walt Whitman in the bathroom, a mistake of his own making that eventually leads to his downfall.
