American entertainment company specialising in streaming media and video-on-demand, originally via mail-order DVDs. In 2013, Netflix expanded into online distribution and film and television production. In 2016, they released an estimated 126 original series or films.
Netflix has been involved in Australian film and television since its move into film and television production: as well as holding the the worldwide distribution license for Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and The Code, they have been involved as co-producers in numerous series, including Glitch, Beat Bugs, Bottersnikes and Gumbles, Kazoops, Mako Mermaids, White Rabbit Project, and The Legend of Monkey.
In 2017, Netflix announced their first original Australian production, Tidelands. This was shortly followed by the announcement of a second series, Pine Gap.
Another American streaming media organisation, Stan, has also produced a wide range of Australian content.
