'The Australian Senate is soon to debate a bill that, if passed, would prevent people who arrive by boat seeking asylum in Australia from ever gaining long-term settlement and protection, and, as a consequence, ultimately rewrite the definition of ‘refugee’ in this country. Allegedly a deterrent to people smugglers and an effort to stop people drowning at sea, the proposal is the product of a policy that attempts to shift the meaning of words in order to violate human rights and international law, gag information, and dehumanise victims.'
