Epigraph : I once stopped at a garage sale and saw a few meagre magazines on display. I politely told the woman who owned the house that I'd hoped to find some books, and she led me to a side room. It was crammed with books from floor to ceiling. I bought the books and I also bought an understanding of the man who owned.the books. Through his books I followed his youthful interest in ships and sails, his training in the RAAF in World War II and his enthusiasm for photography. I found books he'd received as a child, and the books he planned to use to traverse the globe single-handed in the yacht which was finally to fail. I saw his life through that set of books...(Rob Scott, 1998)
