Ethel Davies was accorded first place in the 1949 poetry competition organised by the West Australian branch of the Returned Services League (R.S.L.). One of the judges said of the work, it 'carries a typical tang of Western Australia and provided material suitable for a musical score set to a march' ('Perth Winner of R.S.L. Poem Compeition.' West Australian 29 Sept. 1949, 6 - ).
The following year the R.S.L. conducted another competition, this time in an attempt to attract musical settings for Davies' poem. Although judging was reportedly underway in September that year (Fidelio. 'Music and Theatre.' West Australian 9 September 1950, p.22) , no record of a winning entry has been identified to date.
