History

'The Newcastle Poetry Prize is an annual Australian award for poetry. It was established in 1981 as the Mattara Poetry Prize.

'Initially sponsored by the Hunter Water Board, Newcastle City Council has provided funding via its Community Assistance Program since 1995, and the University of Newcastle has partnered with Council since 2004 to provide additional sponsorship.' (From Wikipedia: Newcastle Poetry Prize)

Notes

  • The Newcastle Poetry Prize began in 1981 as the Mattara Poetry Prize. Each year until 1991 a $10,000.00 prize was awarded for a single unpublished poem. Then there was a three year break and in 1995 the competition emerged in its present incarnation as the Newcastle Poetry Prize. The competition is judged by a distinguished group of poets and the submissions are presented anonymously.
