The NSW Writers' Centre invited Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers to enter its "Survival" writing competition. Short stories (maximum 500 words) or poetry (maximum 20 lines) could be submitted. Winners received cash prizes and free Writers' Centre membership.

Joyce couldn't go anywhere without having the hair done. Even at Aboriginal Education Conferences she would seek out the local hairdresser and make the appointment, to ensure her personal presentation was at its best.
