History

The Story Writing and Art Competition was run by the Department of Veterans' Affairs. 

Introduced in 1962 as a rehabilitation tool for veteran in-patients at the then Repatriation Hospital in Heidelberg,

The competition is organised by Victoria's major ex-service organisations, with assistance from the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre.

In 1999 it was open to all veterans and their partners, war widows and widowers living in Victoria.

Notes

  • The Story Writing & Art Competition (SWAC) is a popular annual event run specifically for members of Victoria's ex-service community. It attracts hundreds of entries each year in the categories of painting, craft, photography, story writing and poetry. The Competition is a joint initiative of Victorian ex-service organisations, the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. It receives generous sponsorship from the corporate and community sectors. The competition began in 1962 at the Repatriation General Hospital.
