The writer describes as true the story of Mary, a young woman convict who escapes in a boat with three men convicts. They travel 2000 miles from Port Jackson to Cape York where the men die but Mary is captured by Aboriginal people. She is found 23 years later.

Tim and his mate Bronze capture a wild brumby which Tim names Codger. Tim, who is terrified of fire, later saves Codger from a stable fire.
