— Review of The Young Speaker : A Series of Short Selections in Prose and Verse Compiled for the Use of Junior Classes Thomas Padmore Hill , 1867 anthology poetry ;
The reviewer describes the book as a 'handy' selection of prose and verse for the young elocutionist. However, he takes issue with all the author's italics, but concludes young readers 'will not be much demoralised if they adopt Mr Hill's emphasis'.

  • A song, 'Norah Mullane', recently published by Mr Franks of Geelong, has been sent to the Ballarat Courier by Mr A. T. Turner, of Ballarat. The words are by Father Power and the song is believed to have been composed for Miss Rosini Carandini, a member of the Carandini family who recently performed in Ballarat.
  • Mr James Anderson, the 'celebrated tragedian' is to appear at the Theatre Royal, supported by Mrs Robert Heir. The report suggests that lovers of 'legitimate drama' will be well served.
  • Mr Bachelder's entertainment at the Mechanic's Institute was well attended and the performance proceeded smoothly, the mechanism having been 'put in order'.
  • The Garrick Club had a full rehearsal at the Theatre Royal last night. The two pieces will be performed next Friday.
