A Real Night Mare : Caused by Reading 'Den's First-Night-Marei"Dear Den. I'd the Maggie Knight mare,", John St Branigan , single work poetry

A response to C. J. Dennis's poem 'In Mummerland : A First-Night-Mare' (written under the pseudonym 'Den') which was published in the Theatre Magazine the previous month (October 1906, p21).

As with 'In Mummerland' this poem cleverly uses the names of numerous theatrical personalities to articulate a semi-coherent storyline. Among the names more recognisable today are : Roy Redgrave (actor), Alfred Hill (composer), Maud Fanning (minstrel singer), Phillip Newbury (singer), Nance O'Neil (actor), C. Haddon Chambers (dramatist), C. Post Mason (entertainer), Phillip Lytton (actor/manager), Ada Crossley (singer), Ben Fuller (entrepreneur), Carrie Moore (actor), Kyrle Bellew (actor).
