The Land as Protagonist with Special Reference to Exploration, Anna Rutherford , single work criticism
Rutherford traces representations of the Australian landscape, from convict perceptions of Australia as Hell or Purgatory to explorers' declarations that Australia was a land 'unfit for poetry.' The examples build towards the conclusion that in every encounter, 'the continent always triumphs' (17).
(p. 9-18)
Wilderness and Garden, Randolph Stow , single work criticism
Stow comments on the writing of William Charles Wentworth and the paintings of John Glover to suggest that they were, 'in their relation to the land, closer to the Aborigines than any of their vandalizing descendants' (24).
(p. 19-24)
The Terrible Nostalgia of the Desert Landscapes : Reflections on Patrick White's Australia from a European Point of View, Karin Hansson , single work criticism (p. 25-33)
