The Wishing Tree, Edith Mary England , single work short story
Ted Rofe returns to his home town of Tirralee because he is discontented in the city, despite his success there. The district is full of memories and he stops for the night near the tree where he and his childhood friend, Carol, used to make wishes. This time, he discovers, the tree grants wishes much faster than it used to do.

Ivy Wallace dreams of becoming an actor. She lives in the same boarding house as a film actor, John Brent, whom she greatly admires. One night she hears him making a despairing speech and rushes to his room to save him. Her intervention is fortuitous and Ivy's dreams look as if they may come true.
