Moina and her younger sister have been brought up by their Aunty Marty since Moina was three years old. Their aunt is kindly, but strict, and keeps them socially isolated, but Moina has met a man and fallen in love with him. She also writes secretly. When she discovers a page written by her mother she is overcome with terror and driven to desperate action.
