AbstractHistoryArchive Description

This thesis considers the cultural and historical importance of the bestseller and attempts the definition of the bestseller as a cultural form.It further considers the role of the publishing industry in relation to literary publishing and analyses relations between publishing culture and commerce. It then evaluates a selection of bestselling titles. The thesis concludes that the bestseller represents a historically unique form of publishing and cultural consumption.
