Grace Winyard gives Fred Everleigh a bible and a white rose as a token of her love as he leaves Somersetshire to try his fortune in Australia. Eight years elapse in which time Fred loses his property, his name and eventually his life. Grace waits patiently until she hears of his death and slowly picks up her own life. (PB)
