Criminal double-cross in England. A newly released prisoner is approached by an old classmate, a jeweller, to rob his premises and thus mask his bankruptcy. He does so only to find that the jewels are fake and for his revenge tracks the jeweller to his house and robs him of the gems he has hidden there. He is caught by the police and though he is sentenced to 14 years gaol, his 'friend's' bankruptcy case is ruined. Competent. (PB)

Romance and murder in an English village in the 1820s. A squire's jealousy and momentary anger kill a handsome farmer on the way to his wedding. Ten years later the squire marries the intended bride and they live 30 happy years together. A confession is found only after the squire's death. Slight substance; well-written. (PB)
