When she reaches the fishing village at 11pm the nurse discovers her charge appears to be poisoned and sets out through the unknown countryside to discover a doctor. Light; well-written, unusual style and subject. (PB)

Two commercial travellers share a hotel room and one smashes a window to relieve the other's asthma attack. The morning reveals that a bookcase not a window was breached, and the hypocondriac is cured. (PB)

Entertaining English romance. Two friends, suitors for the same heriess, toss a coin to decide who shall propose first. When Miss Vanstone hears of this she breaks her engagement - but the prompt proposal of the other suitor, Lord Dudley, persuades her to take the revenge of marrying his rival. All turns out to have been planned by Dudley to repair the first engagement ... Light. (PB)

English romance of wounded heart and beauty captured. The beautiful but flirtatious Ressie Fennimore is nearly the cause of her wounded cousin's death as he convalesces from his wounds on her father's country estate. Her old nurse's warnings to be careful of him seem to be ignored - until Ressie confessed to the invalid that she loves him too. (PB)

English romance. Theodore Payne inherits £1200 a year from his uncle Aikin on condition that he change his name to Aikin-Payne, or the money goes to Aikin's wife's relatives. Reluctantly Payne agrees and hurries to Cannes to let the comments die down in his London clubs. There he meets Ruby Estcourt who only agrees to marry him on condition he change his name and thus give up his legacy. He agrees only to discover she is entitled to the money as next-of-kin - and she promptly settles it on him without the burden of the name. (PB)

A London solicitor's peace of mind and conscience is sorely troubled when, to avoid continual misunderstanding, he accepts credit for having caught a monster pike as reported in a fishing journal. The true fisherman was a lawyer of the same name in a remote village. Very thin tale; attempted humour. (PB)

A poor shop assistant becomes jealous of his sweetheart's association with another man - breaking off their relationship until he learns that she is engaged to sing as part of a travelling quartet, not to be married. Of course he becomes engaged to marry her and insists she break her other engagement ... (PB)

A fascinating and rich Parisienne marries a poor but noble gentleman for his title and to gain entrance to society. For a time she enjoys her success but the French Revolution leads to her imprisonment. A former lover, refused because he was not noble, attempts to rescue her but she is recaptured and executed. (PB)
